September Sneak Peek

Here's a quick run-down of some of the movies coming out this Fall: 

September 6

Stephen King's "It / Part 2" 
No thanks.  The book scared the ever-loving mess out of me when I read it back in the 80's.  I remember watching the mini-series with Richard Thomas (John Boy from the Waltons) but this sequel to the 2017 release looks terrifying. 

Night Hunter
An online predator, captured with the help of a local vigilante, is connected to crimes far more heinous than anyone expected. Henry Cavill and Alexandra Daddario star.  Henry Cavill is dreamy but I'm not sure if he plays the predator or the vigilante in this one.   

Satanic Panic
A pizza delivery girl makes a trip she'll never forget when she delivers food to a group of Satanists. Chelsea Stardust directs the Rebecca Romijn horror/comedy.  

Zeroville
A young cinema buff makes a trip to Hollywood in 1969–during the era of hippies and Manson. James Franco directs and stars, with Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, and Megan Fox also starring.  Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell?  Take my money please. 


September 13

Depraved
A field surgeon who has PTSD creates a man out of body parts. B-movie icon Larry Fessenden writes and directs the modern Frankenstein tale.  Yeah.  I don't think so. 

Freaks
A young girl remains trapped in her boarded-up house at the demand of her father (Emile Hirsch). This film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018 to positive reviews.

Hustlers
Jennifer Lopez leads a group of strippers who decide to hustle wealthy clientele during the early-2000s financial crisis. Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Julia Stiles, Lizzo, and Constance Wu round out the pack. Cardi B also makes her feature film debut.  JLo looks amazeballs in the photos released by the studio.  However, her last couple of movies haven't done very well and I don't  expect this one to be a blockbuster either. 

The Goldfinch
A young man (Ansel Elgort) must navigate through adulthood as he deals with the trauma caused by the sudden death of his mother when he was only 13 years old. Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson also star in the film adaptation of the best-selling novel.  I read the book after everyone raved about it.  I positively HATED it.  I hated everything about it but mostly the characters.  They were some of the most unlikeable characters I've ever read.  I honestly didn't care what happened to any of them.  I don't think the great Nicole Kidman can save them either. 

September 20

Ad Astra
An astronaut travels to the edge of the solar system to solve a mystery that threatens the existence of the human race. Brad Pitt stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Liv Tyler.

Bloodline
A man (Seann William Scott) who values family over anything else learns that his violent tendencies might be contagious.  We haven't seen anything from Stiffler in a while.  And I was A-OK with it. 

Downton Abbey
Quite the stir arises when the King and Queen come to visit Downton Abbey. The critically acclaimed television series makes the jump to the big screen at the helm of director Michael Engler.  I've never seen a single episode of the BBC hit series.  My parents are big fans so I'm guessing they will be seeing this in the theater. 

Rambo: Last Blood
After the Mexican cartel kidnaps a friend's daughter, John Rambo heads below the border to seek vengeance. Sylvester Stallone returns in the fifth installment of the Rambo franchise.  Please refer to my comments regarding Stiffler. 

Where's My Roy Cohn?
The acclaimed Sundance documentary dives into the controversial figure who had a hand in shaping the current political nightmare.


September 27

Abominable
A teenage girl and her friends befriend a Yeti. Together they all embark on a journey to reconnect the creature with his family.  This looks really cute and I'd like to see this with Coach. 

Judy
Renée Zellweger stars as Judy Garland in the biopic chronicling the American actress/singer's life while performing in London in 1969.  Renee Zellweger has the same sour face in everyone of her movies.  It's the weirdest thing. 

 

 

The Day Shall Come
An FBI agent (Anna Kendrick) with ulterior motives sponsors a young preacher (Marchant Davis) in Miami.

Met Gala 2018

In case you've been living under a rock this week or your internet's been out for a few days, Monday was the annual Met Gala (formally known as the Costume Institute Gala).  Held the first Monday of each May, this year's theme was "Heavenly Bodies:  Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."  The exhibition runs until October 2018 and includes pieces donated from the Vatican.

Like everyone else who was live tweeting that night, I love seeing the different interpretations of the exhibition (while the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute annual charity affair is not a "themed" event, many guests and designers choose to wear creations with a (sometimes not so) subtle nod to the show. 

While I may not necessarily like some of the outfits, I do appreciate the beauty of the workmanship and design.  Here are some of the thoughts I had while sitting on the couch in my sweats and being all judge-y: 

I thought Amanda Seyfriend looked like she stepped out of a Raphael or Bottecilli painting.  Her hair, make-up, gown and accessories were stunning! 

I mean, come on.  That close-up is pure perfection.  When she turned and looked at the cameras, she owned that moment. 

Cardi B.  She's a couple of months pregnant and looked radiant. 

I love Gigi Hadid and her gown was reminiscent of a church stained glass window.

 

J-Lo.  That leg! 

Kate Upton played it safe but from the shoulder's up she looked like a Renaissance princess.

Kim Kardashian.

While I respect and support the message, the presentation just seemed off to me. 

Lynda Carter (the original Wonder Woman).  Regal.  Elegant.

Madonna

Rosie Huntington-Whitley.  An angel. 

Rihanna. 

Scarlett Johanssen.  This was awful.  There.  I said it. 

Sarah Jessica Parker reminded me of the Queen of Hearts. 

 

Zendaya's take on Joan of Arc.  I like it. 

 

At first I did not care for this look (that hair bow was throwing me off) but the Vera Wang gown is basically, incredibly, the Sistine Chapel. 

I love the edgy boots and her make-up was flawless! 

Olivia Munn.  This outfit looks better in black and white.  The color really didn't suit her complexion. 

 

Love Ashley Graham.  I think this would be better for an awards show, the Oscars or the Grammy's perhaps.  A little too safe. 

 

It's the Oscars!

I love a good red carpet as much as the next person but this year I was so disappointed in E!'s coverage.  I'm not really sure why Khloe Kardashian was a correspondent for the network -- she really had nothing important to say and was clearly out of her element.  Also, I don't know who or what made Kelley Osborne a fashion expert.  Guiliana Rancic for that matter.  The only one with street credit is the British chic with the unusual first name.  Unfortunately, she hold the microphone right in front of her face while she speaks.  Very distracting.

I don't think there were any major surprises last night.  I was glad to see JK Simmons win for Whiplash and I think everyone knew Julianne Moore was a sure thing.  I, personally, cannot believe that Birdman won Best Picture (I fell asleep during the middle of it and at the end, Coach just look at me and said, "What the hell just happened?").  I read somewhere that American Sniper should have won but voters just couldn't get over that fake baby and truly expected more from Clint Eastwood.

Most played it safe on the red carpet last night.  I don't think there were any major "misses."  A few, "mehs" but nothing terrible.  Here's my thoughts:

Really Like Faith Hill's short do! 

Love the silhouette and color!  Her hair and make-up are perfect!  She's just one of those naturally beautiful women.  She'll age well -- like a Helen Mirren!  

Love Julianne Moore! 

IDK, IMHO, Reese just seems to wear the same thing over and over.  I'd like to see her get really sexy with her gown, her hair and her make-up.  

Margot Robbie is simply stunning!  

Patricia Arquette always looks sloppy and disheveled to me but last night she really rose to the occasion!  

I'm not usually a Jennifer Anniston fan but I think she was my favorite look of the night.  

I think GaGa just finished doing the dishes

That is a LOT of dress.  And a LOT of boobs.  

 

I loved the bottom of this gown, hated the top.  The beads on top were very large and looked cheap.  Almost like an arts and craft project.  

The color and cut are gorgeous but that collar is very distracting.  I would have liked to have seen her wear a big statement necklace with lots of emeralds and diamonds.  

Let's just say I never understood the universal appeal of this Ralph Lauren gown.  I thought it was ill-fitting and in need of a good steaming.  I thought it was horribly boring and looked like a prom gown.

Gwyenth Paltrow looked incredible last night!  I loved everything about this looks!  The gown, the color, the fit, the hair, the make-up and the minimal accessories.  Such a classic and understated look!  

Monday Miscellaneous

• Today at work a friend asked how my weekend was and said that I looked "well rested."  Thank you.  I think.  Now I'm worried about tomorrow. 
• Folks, I have a lot of hair.  A lot.  It's not particularly long but it is very thick and very heavy and there's a lot of it.  Cosmo says my hair follicles are so close together you can hardly see scalp.  And it takes FOREVER to dry.  So that's why I very rarely dry it and usually just pull it back or up.  So today, despite losing an hour of sleep but still managing to somehow look "well rested" I had plenty of time to do my hair.  At least 10 people asked me if I had gotten it cut (including my own child) and / or if I got it colored.  No.  There's just a lot of hair going on and it looks really different when it's "done."
• So JLoveHewitt thinks her boobs are worth $5mil.  OK Jenn.  I see your boobs and raise you.  Seriously.  Mine are bigger and mine are 100% real (not implying that hers are not; just saying mine are not store bought).  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/10/jennifer-love-hewitt-boobs-worth-5-million_n_2849346.html?utm_hp_ref=jennifer-love-hewitt  I just never understood the whole "insuring a body part" (yes, I'm talking to you Jenny-From-The-Block, Mary Hart, Heidi Klum).  An pitcher insuring his arm or shoulder, OK.  A concert pianist insuring his hands, you bet.  But a boob?  I mean, how many women lose a boob (other than to breast cancer).  You really don't hear of too many women being in a horrible accident and having to have a boob amputated.  Or, in JLo's case, an ass amputated.
