Snapple Fact #251

There are more French restaurants in New York City than in Paris. Who knew??

Porkopolis

So we head out to Cincinnati Friday afternoon for the big Hoover game vs. Colerain. T already has been excused for the day from school but Kendall has to go to school in the morning because she left her excuse note on the counter and never got it approved from her principal. I'll check her out after lunch so we can get a good start on the 8+ hour drive. It's going to be tight in the backseat w/ 3 girls (Mary Elizabeth is tagging along). Kendall & Abbie Grace has matching t-shirts to wear to the Hoover game and I bought Zachary a cool t-shirt with the game date and both team's helmets on the front. Zachary has a football game Sunday afternoon so I'll get to see him play.

I'm really looking foward to the trip. Cincinnati has always felt like home to me. I loved living there. We had all the conveniences of a "big" city without all the hassles . . . wonderful parks and museums, excellent shopping, Kings Island, world class restaurants (except the chilli; I just never got the hang of the whole Cincinnati chili thing) and major league sports. Oh! I almost forgot! I loved the Cincinnati Zoo at Christmas time! It seemed like there was always something fun and exciting to do in Cincinnati.

"Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated. I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favorably and pleasantly to a stranger at first glance as this does." -- Charles Dickens

It rained pretty good here late this afternoon. It was thundering & lightening so I had to cancel my 6:30 PM cheerleading practice. Our first game is this weekend but only 5 or 6 girls (out of 15) will be in town for the Jamboree. My friend Jo has graciously volunteered to take over for me Saturday morning. I'm sure the girls will do a great job.

Have a great weekend! Go Hoover!! Good Luck: Jack, Jayson, Justin & Jake!
P.S. Tracy Lev -- I'll let you know how the band / color guard / dance team perform! Chris says the game just won't be the same w/out you & Rick! (KJ says it won't be the same w/out Jo-Jo!) ha! ha!

There were 3 in the bed . . .

and the little one said, "roll-over! roll-over!" So they all rolled over and Chris fell out! ha! ha! Big thunderstorm rolled thru here last night. Of course KJ snuggled in our bed the minute she heard the first crack of thunder. Taylor, as usual, slept thru the entire thing. Chris & I are a little stiff this morning. Kendall is a crazy sleeper so we were both hugging the sides of the bed to give her some more room. But hey! It rained here and that's the most important thing!

Today I need to do some laundry & start packing for our trip to Cincy this weekend. You know football is top priority in your school district when kids are excused from school with a pre-approved letter stating they are traveling to the game. We are really looking foward to seeing LCM, Dean, Zachary & Abby Grace this weekend. I think my Godson has a football game Sunday afternoon and I can't wait to see him play in person. Sunday night are the WEBN fireworks on the Ohio River; the kids don't know what to expect. Hope they're as good as when we still lived there.

I've been trying to find some pictures of me when I was really little because I think Caitlyn has a lot of Aunt Valerie in her (also our cousin Lisa). I found of picture of Uncle George when he was really, really young and I think he looks a lot like Brandon!

It was "meet the teacher" day @ playschool this morning. Margaret & I met all 8 of our new classmates: Holden, Camila, a little boy named Jeries but they call him JuJu, Anderson, Meredith (she walked into our classroom wearing a tank top and a tutu and promptly took off her shoes), Grace, Hunter, and Ava Clare. 4 girls, 4 boys.
This is our 4th year teaching at Prince of Peace (Pinch of Peas as Kendall used to call it when she attended pre-school there) but this is the first time we've ever started the year off with 8 kids. Our first year, we had 2 little boys. Their parents loved it! They were getting one on one attention. Anyway, really looking foward to starting classes next week. Should be a really cute class.

We had a good rain last night and it cooled things down a bit. It's still hot, low 90's today, but not the triple digits we had been experiencing. A little humid today. I came across this quote today and thought it was appropriate for the last couple of days. I like all types of weather, I just can't take the relentless heat and humidity.

Nite Nite

"Good children's literature appeals not only to the child in the adult, but to the adult in the child." -- Anonymous

Nice and quiet and cool in my house tonight. Chris is at the Falcons game tonight and should be home pretty late. Both girls are in bed. I caught up on some of my TiVo and laundry so all is well in my little world.

KJ has to read every night for school and keep track of what she reads in her agenda and give her opinion about what she's read. She's really been into the Magic Tree House series (which I totally love because not only are they reading, but they're learning a little bit about history, too!). Tonight she decided she wanted to read something else so we started to read "Eloise in Hollywood." She asked Chris last night if they could go to FAO Schwarz when they go to NY so I reminded her that the Plaza, where, Eloise lives, is right across the street so I'm thinking that's what sparked tonight's book selection. She got a little frustrated while reading because she couldn't "do" Eloise as well as I do. I get very dramatic when I read outloud to her and use different voices for the different characters. Anyway, tonight in her agenda she wrote, "I LOVE when Eloise talks fancy." As Eloise would say, "I thought that was rawther cute!"

Yay! We have A/C!!

Love Quote of the day: "If there is any agreement that I need to sign... that would be an agreement called forever."

A/C guy came out this afternoon! We have a leak which is causing the connection to freeze up. Hard to believe anything can freeze up in 100+ degree heat but hey! whatever!

Spent the morning at pre-school having a meeting and getting our rooms together. It was great catching up w/ everyone and talking about our summer's. I am extremely fortunate to work w/ a wonderful group of women; each of whom I genuinely like. Going to work is so much easier when you actually like the people you work with. Can't believe this is mine & Margaret's 4th year in the classroom. Friday night at the Hoover game I saw one of the little boys who was in my very first class. He was punching his older brother and making a gun with his finger prentending to shoot at things. Seriously, he didn't learn that in my class!

Chris is headed to Atlanta for the Falcons game tonight. They play the Bengals. Should be interesting w/ out Michael Vick there.

Have a great Monday. I know I will now that I can sleep in my own bed again!

Forgot!

KJ reminded me that yesterday Billy Ray Cyrus turned 46! Happy Birthday Billy Ray!

I'm Not Ready to go back to Work Tomorrow

Although pre-school starts the Tuesday after Labor Day, we have to go in a couple days this week for teacher workdays on Monday & Tuesday and Wednesday is "meet the teacher." I'm not ready to go back to work. It's too hot out!!! I should be at the beach or lounging by the pool!

Chris has to go to New York in September for a trade show and is taking Kendall with him. They fly in on a Monday and plan to spend the day in the city. Not sure yet what she wants to do; knowing KJ, she'll want to do it ALL -- Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Museum of Natural History (especially since she saw "Night at the Museum" w/ Ben Stiller). She'll spend Tuesday w/ her Grandma JoJo while Chris is at the show and they fly home Wednesday afternoon. It's a quick trip but she hasn't been to NYC since Christmas '04. Billy Joel's book, "New York State of Mind" is one of her favorites. It came with a CD and she plays the song all the time when we're cuddling in my bed.

"One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years” -- Thomas Wolfe quotes (American short story writer and novelist, 1900-1938)

Got some rain here yesterday. It was a decent, steady rain. Yay!! My plants and flowers out front may live another week!

Cleaning Day

Trying to get some housework done today. Didn't get much accomplished w/ the tile guy here (there's a fine layer of tile and sheetrock dust EVERYWHERE!) The bathroom turned out spectacular (reminds me of the bathroom at the hotel we stayed in New Orleans). Just waiting on the glass doors so we still have to shower in KJ's room. We also need to pick out a piece of granite for the countertop.

Went to the Hoover game last night and had a lot of fun visiting and chatting with friends. Sat w/ Rick & Tracy Leventry (the guys talk shop, Tracy & I gossip). Tracy probably has different pics than I do on her blog; check it out. Hoover games are such a social event. I like the homecoming game the best though. I love seeing the kids all dressed up. Although Hoover beat Dothan, the game felt really long and it wasn't much fun w/ out the band, the color guard and a half-time show. Kendall had a lot of fun at the youth clinic earlier in the evening and during the game she ran around the stadium w/ her friends Lauren & Joe. Chris enjoyed watching "his boys" out on the field. Jake Gillikin, Justin, Jack Winters, and Jayson Mullins all had a great game.

Chris has Men's lax practice later this afternoon and I have bunco tonight. Katie Reynolds is here for the weekend while her family is at her twin sister's travel soccer game. It rained yesterday afternoon for a little bit before the football game and last night we had a thunderstorm after the game. Still stupid hot though!

I couldn't be happier!!!

My bathroom is done AND it's pouring out!!! Happy Friday!

R U Ready for Some Football???

"Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that." -- Bill Shankly (I think this guy must have graduated from Hoover HS!)

“If a man watches three football games in a row, he should be declared legally dead.” -- Erma Bombeck (I have to check Chris's pulse some Sundays)

"Football Is an honest game. It's true to life . It's a game about sharing. Football is a team game. So is life.” -- Joe Namath

"Football is easy if you're crazy as hell” -- Bo Jackson

What's that smell? Is it pigskin?? Last night T's middle school had their "jamboree" and barely beat Pzitz 22-20. Tonight Hoover high school plays Dothan. Kendall will be up at the high school from 4 PM until kick-off. She gets to hang out w/ the JV cheerleaders, have dinner w/ them, learn a couple of cheers, get her picture taken w/ some of the girls and then gets to go out on the field and cheer. She participated in this fundraiser last year and had a great time.

Tile is beautiful. Angela is here today to do the grout. She said since I'm the lady of the house I should be able to take a shower in the new bathroom Sunday morning. She said Chris should continue to use Kendall's bathroom until I feel appropriate. Sorry Chris.

Still crazy hot here. Yesterday the babies from my last year's class came over for a swim party. We had so much fun! They are getting so big and talking so well. It was wonderful to see everyone again. The kids (and their mom's!) are ready for pre-school to start back up after Labor Day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Playschool Pool Party Day

"The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land." -- G.K. Chesterton

Tile Guy & his wife were here bright & early this morning. Shower floor should be laid today and the rest of the bathroom floor. WOW. In just a few shorts days I'll be luxuriating in a new shower and tub. Which to do first? shower? bath? bath then shower?? decisions, decisions!

I've got a travel quote up there today because last night at dinner Kendall went around the table in a clockwise fashion and made each one of us tell her what our dream vacations are. First round Chris said Australia, I said Venice, Italy (because Australia was already taken), Taylor said Japan. Kendall said Oregon. Second round was sort of the same with Taylor saying Belgium & Switzerland for their chocolates. Kendall said Washington. Third round Chris said Alaska, I said Madrid, Taylor said South America. Kendall said Idaho. Chris convinced her to change the Idaho response to Hawaii. I think at one point in the game she even said New Jersey was one of her dream vacations? What are we talking here, Kendall? Hoboken? Newark?? When we got home from dinner she sat down w/ a map of the US and circled all the states she's been in and made Chris & I make lists of all the places we've been. So for today's blog I tried to find pictures representative of each of our dream vacations. The best I could do for Oregon was a picture of an alleged UFO hovering somewhere in Oregon.

Today I'm having my babies from my last year's playschool class come over to swim and have fun. The babies (I guess now I should be calling them toddlers) continued to get together each week all summer and Taylor babysits for a couple of them. Margaret & I had the most wonderful, sweetest children last year and they really spoiled it for us. We're afraid to start school in 2 weeks. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. I'm afraid. I'm very afraid.

Bumpus Middle School has their first home games tonight. Go Bumpus! Go Bumpus! and KJ & I have cheer practice in 105 heat. It's all good.

Let's Hear it for the Tile Guy!!!

Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance. -- Samuel Johnson

Left the house early today for my haircut & pedicure. Jeffrey cut a lot of hair off the back and now my neck is nice and cool. His beautiful new salon got in these fabulous massaging pedi chairs so I just had to try it out. Treated myself to lunch at one of my favorite places, Zoe's on the way home. All in all I had a wonderful morning.

Came home to an absolutely gorgeous, almost done tiled shower! Roy and Angela (his wife) are doing an incredible job! It's very, very different from the builder's grade crap that was in there before. I can't wait to be the first to take a shower in there!!! Roy & his wife are super, super nice and I would recommend them to anyone in the area who needs some tile work done! I have to keep an eye on Angela though, I think she may try to sneak Buddy in her purse when they're done with this job!

Off to meet w/ KJ's teacher. TTFN!!

Paige - Have a Great 1st Day of 7th Grade; Britt - Have an Awesome Year @ FSU!!

"Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired." -- Mother Teresa

Busy day today. Tile should start going up in the bathroom today. Yeah! It will finally start to look like something. Something good I hope!

If having work in the bathroom wasn't enough, last night our a/c went out. The upstairs unit is fine, the main level unit isn't doing too good. I slept upstairs in the guest room, Chris roughed it out on our bed. Hopefully someone can get to us today. It was pretty rough in the house yesterday.

I'm treating myself to a pedicure and a haircut today and then I have a meeting with KJ's teacher. No, she's not in trouble already. Since no one wanted to be the room mom this year, a couple of us are sharing the responsibilities so we're having a quick meeting to discuss the particulars.

The girls had a great time at dance yesterday. It was a little hectic driving everyone around and getting T from play rehearsal to dance but we managed. KJ knew one little girl from her class and T had several friends in her 2 classes last night. I think she'll know a bunch of girls in tonight's hip-hop class, too.

Part Deux of Re-Deux

"Families are the compass that guide us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter." -- Brad Henry

Very gritty & grimy day today. Concrete board is up in the shower, on the floor and around the tub. Wednesday is the "pretty" day. Tile starts going up.

Still stupid hot here. :-) That's all folks.

Demo Day Over

This is the "Before" picture.
OK, so day 1 of bathroom re-do went pretty well. The entire bathroom is gutted except for the vanity cabinet and countertop (that will come later). We're down to sub-flooring, studs in the shower (besides Chris!!! giggle! giggle!) and my bathtub is hanging to the wall by a thread. I got really, really nervous when they started whacking at things and kind of thought, "hey, my bathroom didn't really look THAT bad" but now I'm excited and really like the tile we picked out. It's going to be a very updated look. Poor Chris. He's afraid I'm going to start walking around the house just looking for more projects to do. Ka-ching.

Kids are doing well this week (heck! it's only Monday) and both girls start dance Tuesday. T has hip-hop on Wednesday and KJ has cheer practice Thursday night. Friday we'll be at the Hoover game and Saturday I have bunco. Sunday is a scout meeting. Tuesday is a room mom meeting at KJ's school and Wednesday I'm getting a haircut that I desperately need. I've cancelled and re-scheduled the last 2 times. I'm not even sure what my hair looks like any more; it's been up in a ponytail most of the summer. Thursday the little babies from my last year's playschool class are coming over for a swim party at the pool. I may have over-extended myself this week. Hopefully I'll be so tired from running around I'll sleep really good at night!

Demo has begun!

This is my dream bathroom: one w/ a fireplace! We're going for a slightly
modified look. ha! ha! :-)
"You are never given a dream without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however." -- Richard Bach

I'm so excited about our bath being re-done. It really, really needed it. Other than finishing the basement in NY and re-doing our kitchen countertops and new appliances in this house, this is our first "MAJOR" reno in 15 years of marriage. We're going to be inconvenienced for a couple of days but it will be worth it. Our next task will be to have the kitchen floor tiled!

Everyone got off to work/school just fine this morning. Busy week. Dance starts (the girls have classes from 4 until 7:30 PM on Tuesdays and 7:30 to 8:30 PM on Wednesday). We have cheer practice Thursday evenings, too. Friday is Hoover HS home opener against Dothan. KJ is participating in a youth clinic that evening. I'll drop her off at the high school after school, she'll have dinner w/ the cheerleaders, has her picture taken w/ the girls, learns some cheers & chants and then gets to go on the field for the Buc Walk and cheer for the first quarter of the game. So, that's where we'll all be Friday night.

Have a great week!

Can u smell what the Coz is cookin'?

If you smell something funky coming out of Hoover, it's either me or Chris. Demo starts on our super new bee-u-ti-ful masterbath Monday. Until it's done, we'll have to share KJ's bath w/ her. YUCK! She's already warned her dad not to TOUCH her mango-pomegrante shower gel. :-)

Sunflowers & Skateboards on Saturday & Sunday

Nice & quiet in the house (except for the screams coming from the TV; Chris is watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Kendall is at a friends and Taylor is going to play laser tag w/ friends in a little while (don't ask).

Went grocery shopping this morning. I usually do it during the week but we had no laundry detergent and Chris was running out of clean underwear.

Re-did my front porch in a "sunflower" theme. I was getting tired of the summer decorations I had out there.

It's still hot today but not unbearable like it's been. Mom said it was 47 degrees in PA last night.

Yesterday Chris took the girls to a couple of skateparks so KJ can work on her bag of (limited) tricks. One skatepark was locked up tight and the other one was full of much, much older kids (Taylor was looking for a cute skater punk but couldn't find any). So, Chris ended up taking the girls to TCBY for treats.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend! P.S. When you have a chance, check out my cousin Heather's blog. She's a self-proclaimed Diva of Pop-Culture and has some interesting views. (link is listed under "Some of my favorite blogs" on the right-hand side)

Saturday Morning

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe." -- Anatole France

Sort of quiet in the house right now. Chris is at lax practice, T spent the night at a friends and KJ is watching HSM2 for the 3rd or 4th time since last night. Betwen the Hairspray soundtrack and HSM 1 & 2, I think I'm going to loose my mind. Kendall had a good time at her friend's b-day party. It was an "almost" sleep-over: all the little girls wore their pajamas or their favorite HSM shirt and brought a stuff animal. The watched the movie, had pizza and cake and then came home. I'm guessing T had a good time at her friend Meg's b-day party. She called from the car and asked if she could sleep over Sarah's house. She ran in, got a change of clothes, kissed us good-bye and ran back out the door. I'll get the scoop today. I was at least able to ask her who she danced with but got an abbreviated answer. To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.
Anatole France

Haven't checked but I'm sure it's going to be hot again today. What else is new? Nothing major planned today and that's the way I like it. Whatever crud my 2 girls had at the beginning of the year has been passed on to me. Sore throat, headache, bodyaches, yucky cough. I just want to curl up on the couch with my blankie.

Last night Chris & I watched the movie "300." It was violent and gory but it really was pretty good. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but I did.

The girls start dance classes next week. They're excited. KJ is taking a ballet/tap/jazz combo class; T is taking a jazz class, a hip-hop class and a ballet class. She'll do recital for the jazz & hip-hop class but not the ballet. Taylor starts Cinderall rehearsals at the middle school next week as well.

Enjoy the weekend!

1 Home, 1 2 Go

Yeah!!! We made it thru the first full week of school! KJ's home, now we're just waiting for T to get off the bus.
We had a few "hiccups" this week, a few tears (I've told Chris a thousand times he's just gonna have to buck up, little camper! ha! ha!), a few headaches (seriously!), and a lot of heat. The weekend is here, High School Musical 2 debuts tonight, both girls have parties to go to. We're just going to relax and enjoy some free time.

Thank God tomorrow's Friday

I'm pooped! Tonight's cheerleading practice wore me out. 15 little girls and just one little ol' me. We got our pom-poms tonight and it was very exciting! The girls' eye's just lit up. Last year they were black & silver, this year they are all silver and very sparkly & shiny. Our little squad is coming along nicely but it's just so hot! Plus there were a lot of bugs tonight.

No major plans this weekend. Just looking foward to hanging out and relaxing. HSM2 is already to go on TiVo so I'm sure we'll watch it several times over the next few weeks.

The other day I bought KJ the Hairspray soundtrack and she's been walking around the house singing "Good Morning Baltimore." We need to move on to another track.

Good Night Noises Everywhere!

OMG!!! A little more than 24 hours to the big event!!!

Oral Hygeine Day at the Cos Household

"Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing." -- Mother Teresa
T had her monthly orthodontist appointment this morning and this afternoon KJ & I have our regular 6-month dental cleanings. My girls are total freaks. They both love to go to the dentist. KJ would go to the dentist every month if insurance allowed it. She also loves to go to the orthodontist and have her teeth counted.

Tonight KJ & I have cheerleading practice and T has auditions for Cinderalla after school today. She wasn't planning to audition at all because it's a musical. Taylor, unfortunately for her, has inherited my tone-deafness and dismal voice. I guess her drama teacher talked her into it. Kendall keeps telling her she's perfect for one of the evil step-sister parts. I think T's worried there will be an on-screen kiss involved and Prince Charming will be someone utterly dorky (i.e., NOT the hottest boy in school).

I got to get my head in the game

Only 2 more days 'til HSM2 comes out!!!! OMG!!!

Misty Colored Memories

OK. So I don't have a voice like Barbra but Kendall and I had so much fun tonight looking at pictures. She has to create a "memory" book for school and we had to print out some pictures. Everyone (i.e., Chris) makes fun of me because I always have my camera ready to go but looking back at some of these pics, I'm so glad I did! KJ particularly loves the pic of her aggravating T-bone on T's 12th b-day last year in Cincy. Sisterly love.

"Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose." ~From the television show The Wonder Years

Another Day I've Accomplished NOTHING !!!

Had to run down to the elementary school this morning to bring KJ some kid's motrin. I don't know if she's just not digging school this year or what but we'll get to the bottom of this.

T asked me to buy her a book ("Sealed w/ a Diss" from the Clique series) the next time I was near Barnes & Noble. So before I met Chris for lunch I ran in and bought it for her. After lunch Chris & I went tile shopping for our new and improved bathroom. Demo begins Monday. There were so many color choices and styles, our heads were spinning by the time we got out of there. Ran to the grocery story before I met KJ's bus. Unloaded and put away the groceries, checked e-mails and here I am!!!

T has an orthodontist appointment tomorrow morning. KJ & I have dentist appointments in the afternoon. KJ & I also have cheerleading practice Thursday night. It's going to be a scorcher. Friday night both girls have b-day parties to go to. Maybe Chris & I will go out for a nice romantic dinner.

We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do. -- Mother Teresa

Are we over the hump yet?

Although this morning went much smoother than any day of the new school year so far, the school nurse call at 9 AM to tell me KJ's in her office again with a headache. Don't know what to do with her. I've had a headache for the last 2 days myself so I'm wondering if it's a weather/high pressure kind of thing. She went to bed early last night so I know she got plenty of sleep. We've had her eyes checked so I know it's not a vision thing. My poor baby.

Fear is the souls signal for rallying. If you're never scared or embarrassed or hurt, it means you never take any chances. -- Rev Run

Not feeling too good today. Whatever T had has been passed along. Sore throat, headache, cough, chest congestion. It's probably the damn heat!!!! I'm just going to blame everything on the heat from now on!

We've started our first full week of school and we're experiencing some difficulties in the morning. The traffic on South Shades Crest Road is horrible. If Chris doesn't leave the house by 7:15 AM and get the girls to school fairly early, he sits in all that high school and freshman center traffic on his way to work. Monday morning he got to work at 8:30 AM. He said he felt like it was the old days when he had to drive to Brooklyn. Anyway, whatever we're doing in the morning is not working. Chris is getting the girls up in plenty of time but they are procrastinating. We've had some tears this week and Taylor has left her bagel in the toaster a couple of times so I know she didn't have any breakfast. Taylor said it's because she's still in "summer mode."
